Inside “Intern with Ian” Winner’s Luxury Floral Design Experience

When Mason Nowak of Karen’s Flower Shop in Milton, Ontario entered FTD’s Intern with Ian contest, he was looking for inspiration and the chance to refine his skills in large-scale floral design. What he gained was so much more—a transformative experience that deepened his artistry, sharpened his business insight, and reignited his passion for the floral industry.

Hosted by Ian Prosser AIFD, internationally renowned designer and owner of Botanica International Design Studio in Tampa, Florida, the internship gave Mason an inside look at how a world-class floral team executes events on a grand scale. Over several days, he worked alongside Ian and his staff as they prepared for a busy weekend that included a high-end gala and an elegant wedding at the Ringling Museum in Sarasota.

“My internship with Ian was truly unforgettable,” Mason shared. “I gained hands-on experience in every part of luxury event design and learned what it takes to execute high-end florals with precision and artistry.”

During his time at Botanica, Mason helped with everything from designing arrangements and prepping installations to learning the logistical and operational strategies behind successful large-scale events. He observed how communication and collaboration kept the fast-paced production floor running smoothly—something he plans to bring back to his own shop in Milton.

According to Ian, Mason’s enthusiasm and curiosity made him an ideal fit for the internship. “Mason seemed particularly enthusiastic about developing his wedding business and just needed a little leg up,” Ian said. “I knew he could really benefit from being with us for a few days to see how larger events come together.”

Mason’s internship coincided with two significant events that showcased the scale and sophistication of Botanica’s work. The first, a $300,000 gala, included draping, custom linens, furniture, and florals for 70 tables—22 of which featured multiple long arrangements—as well as stage décor and four towering statement pieces reaching 15 feet high. The second event was a luxury wedding at the Ringling Museum, featuring personal florals, a grand ceremony setup, and a lavish reception. Despite challenges with wind and timing, the Botanica team demonstrated professionalism, creativity, and problem-solving at every turn.

For Mason, these experiences offered valuable lessons about both the art and business of floral design. His top takeaways included the importance of strong mechanics and structure, the role of teamwork and communication, and the balance between creativity and consistency that defines successful event floristry.

“This internship completely renewed my inspiration and confidence as a floral designer,” Mason said. “Ian’s mentorship showed me what’s possible when artistry meets excellence, and I’m excited to bring new ideas and techniques back to my shop.”

Ian, who has hosted FTD’s Intern with Ian program for eight years, views it as a way to give back to the profession he loves. “As a senior designer, I feel obliged to pay it forward,” he said. “Nothing gives me more pleasure than helping another florist—whether they’re new to the industry or simply looking for a fresh perspective.”

By the end of his internship, Mason left Tampa with a renewed sense of purpose, a deeper understanding of event floristry, and new tools to elevate both his designs and his business. His time with Ian Prosser AIFD reflects what FTD’s Intern with Ian is all about—empowering florists to dream bigger, design bolder, and take their artistry to the next level.
